Hororātā Hall Project Update & Call for Builders
The Hororātā Community Trust, together with the community, continues to make steady progress on the Hororātā Hall project. Following is an update and call for expressions of interest from builders.
The Hororātā Community Trust, together with the community, continues to make steady progress on the Hororātā Hall project. Strong support was received for the preliminary plans at the public meeting and across a range of presentations to stakeholders.
Guided by the project brief, the focus is to protect and restore the original 1890 heritage Hall footprint, while removing the later 1960s and 1970s additions and replacing them with modern, fit-for-purpose facilities. This approach ensures the character and history of the original Hall is retained, while creating a space that better supports how it is used today and into the future.
The restoration work will carefully return key elements of the original 1890 Hall, including reinstating traditional features such as the entrance and building materials, while strengthening the structure to meet modern building and seismic standards.
Thoughtful planning has also gone into how the new additions will be integrated with the original Hall. The new facilities have been designed at a smaller, more residential scale, ensuring the heritage building remains the focal point. The landscaping is being designed to highlight and celebrate the original Hall, while creating a cohesive and welcoming space that connects well with the surrounding village.
Consideration has also been given to long-term maintenance, sustainability, and creating strong indoor-outdoor flow to support a wide range of uses. The intention is for the Hororātā Hall and its grounds to sit comfortably within the village, reflecting both its heritage and its ongoing role supporting community life.
The preliminary design is now being finalised as part of the resource consent process, with further refinement underway as we work through quantity surveying and detailed landscaping.
The Hororātā Community Trust appreciates the feedback received from the community and stakeholders to date. This has helped shape the direction of the Hororātā Hall project. We look forward to continuing this collaborative approach and sharing further updates as the design progresses.
