Oceania Heavyweight Championship

The title that all heavy event athletes have on their bucket list!

This is an open event, not an invitational however a high level of competency is required to compete. The field is limited to 10 competitors. Once 10 have entered the field will be closed.

Below are the minimum standard marks required for an athlete to enter this competition. This has been worked out at 85% of marks achieved at six Hororata Highland Games. The Committee reserves the right to decline an entry.

There is a total prizepool of $7500.00 for this championship – details will be provided upon entry.

Oceania Heavyweight Championship competitors are fully catered for while attending the Hororata Highland Games with airport meet and greet and first class hosted accommodation within the Hororata district. The local community enjoy this interaction as much as competitors do! Competitors are welcomed into the Tartan Club marquee for the post Games function to mix with officials, volunteers and VIP’s. You are responsible for your own travel costs to Christchurch.

Competitors in other categories are responsible for their own transport and accommodation. If you are travelling to the event from outside the district and need accommodation, please let us know at time of entry as we can arrange this locally at discounted prices.

Entry Standards

  • 18lb Stone = 9.50m / 31ft (16lb Stone 11.50m / 37ft)
  • 16lb Hammer = 24.70m / 81ft
  • 22lb Hammer = 19.30m / 63ft
  • 28lb LWFD = 14.20m / 46ft
  • 56lb WOB = 11ft
  • 16lb Sheaf = 20ft

  • Hammer Throw (16lb and 22lb)

  • Stone Putt (18lbs)

  • Weight for distance (28lbs)

  • Weight for height (56lbs)

  • Caber Toss

  • Hororata Stones (90 to 140kg)

  • Farmers Walk (100kg)

Hororata Highland Games Championships

The Hororata Highland Games Heavy Championships are open to anyone to enter, no experience is necessary. Advice and training will be given on the day. We also try to run at least one training day for you to attend prior to the event. The total prize pool across all three categories is $3,900.00

Accommodation and transport can be provided at discounted rates for competitors in this, please contact games@hororata.org.nz for details.

Entry fee

Entry fee is $45.00 and will include a competition tee shirt.

Men’s Championship

Open to anyone to enter who is of a reasonable fitness.

No competition experience necessary. Limited to 10 athletes.

  • Hammer (16lb)
  • Sheaf (14lbs)

  • Stone Putt (13lbs)
  • Caber Toss (40kg)

  • Weight for distance (28lbs)

  • Weight for height (56lbs) Only done if needed

Women’s Championship

Must be able to demonstrate at the time of entry, the ability to compete at this level. The committee reserves the right to decline entry to this championship if the athlete cannot demonstrate the ability to compete at this level safely.

Limited to a field of 8 athletes. If we do not have three entries in this category then all athletes will compete in the Second Division.

Second Division Women’s Championship

The Women’s events will be run in tandem.

Open to anyone entering who is of reasonable fitness. No competition experience is necessary.

Limited to a field of 8 athletes.
