Our first-ever Behind the Gates bus tour experience is on Sunday 15 March. Discover water’s role in the production of food, from river to farm.
Step behind the scenes of the Central Plains Water Scheme on this guided bus tour, offering rare access to key parts of the scheme normally closed to the public.
The tour includes:
- Welcome talk with the history of water presented by the Hororata Historical Society
- Bus travel to the Rakaia River intake
- A guided journey along part of the 17-kilometre canal system
- Viewing the Labyrinth Weir
- A visit to a working farm to see how water moves from river to land to support food production
- Return to the Hororata Hall for a sausage sizzle and Q&A
Learn how the scheme operates, why it was built, and the role it plays in supporting farming, food production and communities across Canterbury.
The bus tour starts and ends at the Hororata Hall 12.30–5.30pm
Tickets $20 – bookings essential – Limited to 100. Tickets are sold out.
Includes the bus tour, afternoon tea and sausage sizzle at the end of the day.
A community event run by the Hororata Community Trust, in collaboration with CPWL and CPWT. All profits are reinvested back into the local community.
