The Hororata Community is an active one with many groups offering a range of services.

Hororata Parish

The Parish of Hororata is made up of a diverse mixture of people. Some are 6th generation descendants of the earlier settlers and others are recent arrivals involved in local farming activities, or commuting to work in Christchurch or neighbouring towns.  www.hororataparish.co.nz

Windwhistle Bookclub

We meet one evening a month Feb-Nov, rotating between each other’s houses. We read the same book (provided) and talk about it, along with any other social conversation that develops. Not high academia! Host provides small supper and returns books to library. Max size of group 12. We cover the Widnwhistle/Glenroy/Glentunnel. Hororata/Coalgate/Darfield area. Hororata Playcentre

Hororata Playcentre, is a licenced Early Childhood Centre with a difference!  Playcentre is a parent cooperative organisation. Parents are responsible for the management of the centre as well as

Windwhistle Playgroup

Playgroup sessions for preschoolers and parents/carers during school term time on Tuesdays at Windwhistle School library from 9:30-11:30am. Everyone welcome.

Twinkle Tots

Music for preschoolers held in the Hororata School Library on Wednesday morning at 9:30am (during term time) followed by morning tea. Gold coin donation per family. www.hororataparish.co.nz

Hororata Swimming Club Inc

The Hororata Swimming Club exists to help fundraise towards the maintenance of the Hororata Primary School swimming pool.  The Club sells keys to the Community and wider Community which enables members of the public to use the pool from 6.00am to 9.00pm during daylight saving hours.  Whilst the pool is closed to members of the public during school hours (school time) 9.00am to 3.00pm it is available over weekends and the hot month of January through to the end of March.  Phone Penny Oliver 0274 353 054 or hororataschooloffice@gmail.com for key purchase or to gain entry to the pool for casual swims. Hororata Small Bore Rifle Club

Hororata Small Bore Rifle Club has a range on the Hororata Domain from April – October. Club nights are Tuesday’s starting at 7:30pm. New members and casual shooters are most welcome. Equipment, ammo and coaching can be provided to new shooters. The Club competes against Darfield and West Melton during the season as well as friendly competition among themselves each week. They also coach the Hororata Scout team. Anyone interested can contact Regan Dalley 021 033 3176 or just turn up on a Tuesday evening (range is in the reserve opposite the hall).

Hororata Tennis Club

Hororata Tennis Club is situated on the Hororata Domain. Senior and Junior teams play in the Malvern Saturday Competition and Twilight Teams play on Thursday evenings in summer.  Junior Tennis starts at 930am; Senior Tennis starts at 1pm. Click here for more

Hororata Golf Club

The Hororata Golf Club is a magnificent picturesque 18 hole course situated in the small rural town of Glentunnel, some 35 minutes West of Christchurch. The course is set across the terraces of the Selwyn River. Click here for more.

Terrace Station Charitable Trust

Terrace Station at Hororata is a wonderful place to visit, bookings are essential. The Heritage New Zealand, Category 1 homestead dates from the mid 1850s. The 1 hectare garden is full of magnificent trees underplanted with woodland perennials and bulbs. In every season there is something to enjoy. www.terracestation.org.nz

Hororata Historical Society Inc.

Hororata Historic Society maintains the historic Coton’s Cottage and the Hororata Museum, which contain a wide range of artifacts, archives and photographs relating to the history of our district. Set on a beautiful rural site with plenty of parking, the cottage and museum are a great destination for those exploring the countryside, and for anyone interested in New Zealand history. Groups welcome. School children free. Family histories and much more. Coton’s Cottage and Museum is open 1.30pm – 4pm every Sunday, September to May, open by appointment other times. Come see us at Cotons Road, Hororata.
